Skyrim 10 Tips Elder Scrolls V

With the launch of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim today, RPG enthusiasts can look forward to losing many hours to this addictive game. Ten Ton Hammer’s review of Skyrim details the sandbox nature of the gameplay, both in character development and questing. As that players today are unused to having an incredible amount of choices available to them in games, this freedom can lead to some preventable problems with players. However, have no fear as that Ten Ton Hammer is here to give you ten tips to keep you heroically questing.

Tip #1 – Save Early, Save Often

Skyrim is a fairly punishing game- the bad thing about the concept that a dragon can swoop down on you at any time is, well, that a dragon can swoop down on you at any time. Worse, the game isn't too conscientious about auto-saving. Get in the habit of saving before and after every encounter and you'll save yourself a lot of backtracking. It is also helpful to save before making a big decision that could have a tremendous impact upon your game.

Tip #2 – Study the Skills

It is very prudent to thoroughly study each of the skills in the game and decide which ones you will concentrate on for the specific character you are playing. Concentrate your choices within a few skills and don’t spend your points across the board, thereby diluting your effectiveness. A wide variety of combat disciplines are at your disposal, but the more you stick to a single style - one handed blunt, destruction magic, etc. - the more your skills will grow, the more feats you can train, the less time you'll spend playing the menus to play the game, the better the equipment you'll feel compelled to invest in, and the more powerful a warrior you'll be. Save the other options for other characters, because (chances are) you're going to feel like playing this game more than once.

Tip #3 – Be a Smart Looter

Just like in Oblivion, just about everything that isn't nailed down is yours for the taking. Whether or not you want to use the red hand of theft (and reap the consequences) is your business, but everyone has to be concerned about inventory space. The game is fairly generous with inventory size, but you'll still want to carry only high value stuff away from long dungeon runs. A good rule of thumb is to only pick up items worth 10+ times their weight in gold.  Make sure that you grab the gold off of every corpse you see as that gold does not add any weight. Also, don’t be afraid to come right back to a dungeon after selling your excess inventory to grab any loot you left behind the first (or second) time.

Tip #4 – Always have a Companion

Even though companions can (literally) get in the way, game difficulty is clearly balanced with the assumption that you'll be bringing a companion along, so do it! Some potential companions you'll nearly trip over, others are yours for the price of a conversation, and some others require a little more effort. Each companion is different so make sure you pick one that complements your combat style. Don’t be afraid to use companions as mules to carry extra loot that you pick up. You’ll be surprised by how much some of them can carry!

Tip #5 – Buy a House

Players can purchase a house in each major city. Houses are useful for a number of reasons, but the primary reason is that it’s a great place to store your stuff. As there are no banks, you will need a safe place to store all your goodies. To cut down on travelling for specific tasks, you can upgrade your house to allow you to cook and do alchemy. The bookshelves are especially handy for easily storing your book collection. After you purchase house upgrades, thoroughly search them as you will find inventory items and even some gold.

Tip #6 – Talk to Everybody

One of the strengths of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is that everybody has a story to tell. A smart player will talk to everybody that he possibly can, which can lead to further side quests, rumors of interesting events, and the location of various groups. By engaging in conversation, players will have a better grasp of the current situation, both local and kingdom-wide. Knowledge is power, my friends. Talking can also lead to the discovery of new companions or trainers who can boost your skills.

Tip #7 – Stay Mobile and Stay Alive

The key to surviving most boss encounters, especially for DPS and mage types, is to avoid getting hit. Shield blocking is better than nothing (though, to my mind, underpowered at first) but you'll still likely take damage unless your character is built as a tank. You might find it easier to play in third-person as you bob and weave, but bob and weave you must. Don’t be afraid to run away to give you more time to use your precious healing magic (if you have some). Use your shouts to give you some much needed room to maneuver.

Tip #8 – Consumables are your Friends

There's no shame in leaning on consumables, such as potions and scrolls, in a single-player game, but you'll want to know the characteristics of scrolls (in particular) before a frantic fight. For example, you won't want to find out that your Scroll of Harmony requires a 5 second cast when a charging frost troll has you in his sights. If you're wielding magical weapons, you should keep some soul gems handy, too - these work like ammo, and if your weapon runs dry, its effectiveness will be greatly decreased. If you’re playing on an Xbox, keep some potions handy in your “favorites” menu.

Tip #9 – Pace Yourself

Skyrim is a game that will punish you for trying to rush headlong through the main story. It's tough for some of us, but ignore the apparent urgency of the core quests and spend some time exploring each area, completing side quests, amassing loot and fortune, leveling up, finding spell books or training combat disciplines, building up secondary attributes like frost and fire resistance... treat the game as you would a traditional hero's journey and you'll spend far less time dirt napping later in the game. Remember that the world of Skyrim is vast and that you shouldn’t cheat yourself of exploring and experiencing the richness of this fantasy world. Most gamers complain about how most games today are played in fifteen hours or less. Now here’s a game world where you should be, at the most, at the second major quest hub in the game by that time period, so enjoy the ride!

Tip #10 – Stuck? Look Around!

The environment often contains clues to help you through the puzzles you'll run into, so keep a torch or magelight spell handy. Not only that, but the 3D item viewer accessed through your inventory isn't just for Bethesda's artists to show off their elite skills. We'll leave it at that.

The ten tips given above should help you navigate your way through the perilous world of The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim. Follow these tips and you’ll not only be a smarter and richer player, but your character’s survival chances will go up dramatically.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Hints tips and cheats

Skyrim Hints and Tips

If you’ve been on Planet X for the last year or so then you may not realize that Elder Scroll V: Skyrim was released on 11-11-11. So run to the store and buy Skyrim now.
Skyrim promises to be one of the top games of 2011, and will undoubtedly win many awards. With superb graphics, an open game play and a detailed plot. It’s likely to take many hours to complete. It’s likely that newcomers to the game or beginner players will find it extremely hard;
(Scroll down for instructions on how to enable the cheat console on Skyrim)
I caution that using cheats could spoil the game, and in some cases could actually ‘break’ the game – so always make a backup!
As I play the game I will also begin to provide some hints and tips such as ‘combat techiniques’, ‘mini walkthroughs’,’general tips’.
Let me know in the comments if there’s anything you’d like to see in this article! Have fun!
**coming soon** As I play the game and hopefully succeed in quests etc I'll add walkthroughs to this article.

Hints and Tips

It's very early to put in proper hints and tips yet, but this section will list as many tips as I find. Hve a good tip? Then leave me a comment and I'll incorporate it....
General Quick Tips
  • Encumberance - as much as I love to pick up every item I can, carrying too much can have some big penalties - try and store or sell any items you cannot use or do not need yet before a quest.
  • Don't neglect magic - I've found that most of the recent Elder Scrolls games have been very difficult and just having a little magic (such as healing) goes a long way to making the game easier - I'm the kind of gamer that wants to charge into battle with axes flailing, but subtle use of magic keeps me alive longer – at the very least chose the Restoration skill. You should also look at some defensive magic that may either defend against spells, or allow you to move quietly etc.
  • Keep plenty of healing items or spells. DOH
  • Plan battles strategically – just running in isn’t always effective; use height as an advantage, and have an escape route planned.
  • Be patient – you’re not going to become an instant Hero – it takes time, and you will have to do plenty of ‘grinding’ to get XP – but it will be worth it in the end!
  • Follow the main quests for a while as it gives you a great introduction to the game and the Shout.
  • Don’t neglect the guardian stones – you’ll come across them right at the beginning of the game and throughout the game – they will add bonuses to your chosen ‘path’.
  • Save – if you’re about to pick-lock something then save just before – thus if you fail, you can re-load and try again! The same can be said for combat – if there’s a major battle coming up – save just before it.
  • Purchase a house – the sooner you get a house the better – it allows you to store items (especially ingredients) and ensure you won’t become over encumbered.

How to enable the Skyrim Cheat Console:

Caution: while using console cheats for Skyrim is easy, you really should try and complete the game without using them. You should always make a backup of save files prior to using the console as you do not know what effect the cheat codes may have – as an example, in one game I used a command that killed all local enemies – sadly I managed to kill an NPC who was very important for a quest I was following.
The following method will enable the cheat console (Note this only works on the PC version):
  • This doesn't seem necessary on the digital download version - but possibly may be required for the non digital download version: Edit the file ‘skyrim.ini’ and set the flag ‘bAllowConsole’ to 1. The skyrim.ini file is located in the My Games folder in My Documents; the bAllowConsole flag is under the General section.
  • While in the game use the ‘tilde’ or ~ key to open the console – it’s possible that you will not see the console (as happens in Dragon Age) – but usually you will see a flashing prompt at the bottom of the screen. (Note, I will add instructions on how to assign a different key soon - the tilde key doesn’t always work).
I do not know the actual cheat codes for Skyrim yet but will add a table as I discover them! It’s likely that the codes will be similar or the same as the Oblivion Codes – so check out the Oblivion Cheat Codes here.

Daedra Heart Locations

  • Go to the college in Winterhold and talk to Enthir. After first lesson talk to him again - eventually you will be asked to meet him in his room - you can then buy 2 daedra hearts for about 1000 gold each - they get replenished

  • Try reading every book you see, the bigger the value of it, the more likely it has a free skill up or a quest inside waiting for you
  • To hide your UI while taking screenshots type in tm in console (~), then type it again to bring it back
  • Sometimes if a dragon is not landing for a long time try moving to more clear surroundings
  • You can take torches off the wall to make the room more dark if you are trying to sneak
  • When attacking with bow from far away press the sneak button to do double damage, even if you are not a sneaky character
  • Most items that you put inside your home will stay there, so you can safely decorate it however you like
  • Using Unrelenting force will stop any enemy casting/channeling
  • Every major city stables has a wagon which you can use to fastravel to other cities you've never been to

  • Your horse can climb up mountains that you couldn't on foot.
  • You can take keys from your companions to have access to their house
  • If the NPCs are asking you about your health ("feeling sick?" or "You feeling alright?") that means you have a disease, use a shrine to cleanse it, or craft a disease curing potion and drink it
  • Don't sell all of your magical weapons since you can disenchant them and level up your enchanting skill that way
  • You can place baskets on peoples head and then steal their stuff without them noticing -LINK
  • You can hotkey your favorite items by opening the favorite menu (Q), highlighting the item and click 1-8 buttons on your keyboard
  • Fire does the most raw damage,Frost and Shock do the same amount of damage, but ice drains stamina and slows the enemy, and Lightning drains magicka.
  • You can revive every living creature except dragons with the Reanimate spells in the Conjuration tree
  • Making Iron daggers and Leather Bracers is a quick way to level up early smithing, use them for enchanting skill ups or sell them to a vendor for speech skill ups
  • When you increase your stamina you also increase your maximum carry capacity by 5
  • By holding the "Use" key you can move items around.
  • When you trade armor to your companions they automatically equip it if its better then what they currently have.

  • To discover new dragon shout words talk to the Argenier the Greybeard leader in the High Hrothgar and he will give you a small side quest and direct you to a new world wall one a time.
  • You can fast travel while over encumbered with a horse
  • If you are completely outmatched against a mage (as in, an enemy that uses ONLY magic), try to get behind cover. If you can stay behind cover long enough while the enemy is shooting at you, their magicka will eventually drain, and you can then use a weapon/spell that drains magicka to finish them off while they sit there, helpless
  • If you are a mage or archer who is outmatched by a melee-only enemy, you can use the terrain to your advantage. If you see a cliff, jump on top of it and your enemy usually won't be able to follow you, giving you precious time to deal damage while avoiding the enemy.
  • If you are playing a mage character, make sure you check out the Mage College in Winterhold. Just be ready for a very challenging quest chain.
  • If you are playing a stealthy character, ask your nearest innkeeper about rumors..
  • Best way to skill up Sneak is preforming sneak attacks
  • Summoned creatures ( through spells or scrolls) are very powerful and can be a great help in some of the tough boss fights, dragon priests come to mind.
  • Saving enchanted weapons and disenchanting them will let you level enchanting extremely fast and make good profit out of it since enchanted items are worth more
  • You can hotkey spells and equipment on the Xbox (and probably the PS3, someone will have to check) by favoriting an item/spell, then holding left or right on the d-pad in the favorites menu with the item/spell you want to hotkey selected. After you close the favorites menu, you will then be able to switch to whatever you hotkeyed by hitting left or right
  • Atronachs are completely immune to spells of their own type, so if you are mainly a fire spell user, the best atronach to use is the fire one, as you can use your spells without needing to worry about damaging your minion.
  • Your companion can carry an unlimited number and weight of stuff, but only if you tell them to pick them up in command mode.
